The History of LaiYuen

Recently, local culture is emphasied everywhere. And even, there are promotions on all kinds of local cultural teaching. Local cultural teaching teaches people to know their homeland, and ancesters. By doing so, they can get along with their homeland, using the resource well and love it.

Wu-Fong was called A-Da-Wu and where was an area of Pin-Pu aboriginals in early ages of Taiwan. During the Chin Chen-lone Dynasty, the Lins' ancester Lin Shi came to Taiwan with his kins. They first lived in Da-Li, but later, because of the mutiny of Lin Suan Win, they were involved. They were forced to be away from Da-Li. Lin Shi's oldest daughter-in-law Lin Haung Rea-Nean moved to the southern part of Wu-Fong, a place called Chu-wey with her children Chun-Yaw and Chia-Yien. This started a hardship of the Lins' reclamation in A-Da-Wu. Chia-Yien had four children, and the oldest son Din-Bon's houses were located opposite from the Lins'. So, they were called Lower Town. And the second son Din-Kuo's houses were located in the north. And they were called Upper Town. From then on, the lins was divided into Upper Town and Lower Town.

It is said that Chia Yien dreamed the God of Land gave him money, and then he used the money in running business and became rich. So, the Lins became a rich family. But his older son was killed by a man called Lin Hen-Shan of some disputes. And Wen-Chia, son of Din-Bon, killed Lin Hen-Shan and was put in prison. But Lin Wen-Chia was a soldier and joined and won the battle of a revalent. So, he didn't have to be prisoned. In 1861, he led to break through Tai-Pin troop, and was promoted to commander-in-chief.

During Tong-Zhi years, he won many battles and recommanded by a premier called Tzuo Tzun Tang to the commander of army and navy. In 1864, he died in Wan-Tsuey Guan. The The body was unfound. His descendants buried his clothes in the mountain Dau Fei Fong. And then it was moved to Nuo Chiaw Cheng Ken in Tai-Pin Chie-Long-Pu. Lin Wen-Chia was promoted as the title "The Protector of The Prince" after he died. And his house became a representive building of Lower Town—Palace Protecto's House. The Lins in Wu-Fong reached military achievement highly when Lin Wen-Chia was in charge. Wen-Chia had three sonss, among them, Lin Chuao-Don succeeded his father's achievement most. Chuao-Don helped the Taiwan Governer Liu Ming-Chuang beat French Troop in Shi-Chiu Hill. So, Lin Ming-Chuang favored Lin Chuao-Don and Lin Wen-Chin of upper town as monopolizing camphor business of Taiwan. And the Lins became wealthy. But the lower town of the Lins appeared decline and fall after Lin Chuao-Don died. By the turning point, his cousin Lin Cian-Ton of upper town rose. And he was an intellectual but not a soldier. He turned the Lins from military achievement persuing into culturalized.

When Lin Wen-Chia got to his high-light, there was also an outstanding member of Upper of Town called Lin Wen-Chin. After the Lins moved to A-Da-Wa(Wu-Fong), all of the members lived rural lives and practiced martial art to deep their bodies healthy. The best two of them were Lin Wen-Chia and his son Lin Chuao-Don. But these two father and son were involved in political war. And this branch of the Lins went declined. Wen-Chia had a cousin Wen-Chin of upper town. Wen-Chin was fond of literature. That’s very unusual among other siblings and cousins.

Lin Wen-Chin also named Yuen-Chin or Tio-Shan is the third son of Sir Lin Dien-kuo. And his mother is Madame Lo. In 1893, he passed the local official exam. Because of him, the Lins became the only culturalized family among the five families in Taiwan. And Madame Lo taught Lin Wen-Chin to be kind. So he was very generous and helped the poor and starved people. He also shifted the fighting among the immigrants from Province Chuan. For these good deeds, people respected his as Sir Elder Wan-An.

Wen-Chin had two sons, Cian-Ton and Jie-Ton. And the two brothers had three cousins, Zhen-Ton, Lie-Ton and Ji-Ton. And they were called by their fellow townsmen the Five Brothers of Ton. Among them, Mr. Lin Cian-Ton influenced Taiwan mostly in economics, literature, politics, arts and Taiwanese racial struggle.

According to the book, in 1893, after Sir Lin Wen-Chin passed the local official exam, for pleasing his mother like an old story in ancient China: An old man called Lau-Lai-Tzi. He is almost seventy years old. And his parents are almost ninety. To make his loved father and mother feel young and happy, lau-Lai-Tzi dressed himself as a child and acted like he is five years old. So Wen-Chin built Lai Garden. And according to “the biography of my father Wen-Chin” by Lin Cian-Ton”, my mother Madame Lo is getting old, I hope I can be like Lau-Lai-Tzi to make her feel young and happy. So I built Lai Garden on the hill in Wu-Fong. There are well-organized plants in it. And the Lai-Garden is very quiet and calm. I also hire some actor. On fine days, they will have performance to entertain my mother Madame Lo. And I will accompany her to enjoy this with drinking. I’ll do everything to make my mom happy. Lai Garden, Wu Garden in Tainan, Bei-Kuo Garden in Shin-Zu and Lin Ben-Yuen house garden were called the four Gardens in Taiwan.

Lin Jie-ton, the younger brother of Lin Cian-Ton wrote

A building stands still under the moonlight
Wth shadow waving in the pool.
And a plum tree blooms
When wind blows the aroma to the neighborhood.
The Fragrance of red round litchis are flown everywhere,
Other green plants reflect shadows on water clean and clear.”

The poem is about the scenery of Wu-Kue Building. Tsiao-Shi Pool litchi Island and Fe-Shang-Tzueh-Yue Boot (It’s a stage for plays, when watching plays, everyone drinks, Fe-Shang means when pouring wine, cups up and down, are like flying. Tzueh-Yue means even moon gets drunken in the drunken eyes.)

But son of Upper town, Lin Cheng-Juen said in his book “The History of Repairing Lai Garden”, according to the picture from Chen Min-Da, Wu-Kue Building should be built in 1887. And we can know that Lai Building was built before Kuang-Shui 13th In Chin Dynasty.
